Cuban parliament opens 2-day session
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
HAVANA -- Cuba's parliament is meeting in one of its twice-annual
legislative sessions.
President Raul Castro is expected to speak at the close of the two-day
event about the status of his social and economic reforms.
He is also likely to touch on his battle against corruption, which has
caught up dozens of high-ranking Cuban executives and government
officials and a handful of foreign businessmen.
Observers will be watching to see if new Vice President Miguel
Diaz-Canel is taking on increasing responsibility since assuming the
post in what was seen as the beginning of a generational leadership
transition.
Foreign media were not allowed access to Saturday's proceedings.
Delegates have been meeting in committee this past week ahead of the
full session of parliament.
