Cubans remembers 2 dissidents killed in crash
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
HIALEAH, Fla. -- Cuban-Americans are remembering two dissidents killed
in a car crash on the island on the one-year anniversary of their deaths.
Members of the Christian Liberation Movement and the public will gather
Friday at a Hialeah church to discuss the legacy of Oswaldo Paya.
Paya and youth activist Harold Cepero died after the vehicle they were
riding in crashed into a tree. A Spaniard who was driving the car has
been convicted of vehicular homicide, but Paya's family doubts the
government's account of their deaths.
Paya's family believes the crash was not an accident. They are pressing
for an international investigation into the crash.
Paya was the lead organizer of the Varela Project, a signature-gathering
drive regarded as the largest nonviolent campaign to change the system
Fidel Castro established in 1959.
