Trial set for Spaniard in Cuba dissident crash
The Associated Press

HAVANA -- State media say a Spanish man being held in Cuba will go on
trial Oct. 5 in connection with a car accident that killed a prominent
dissident and another opposition member.

Angel Carromero's trial on homicide charges will occur in Bayamo, about
500 miles (800 kilometers) east of the capital and near where the fatal
crash occurred.

Carromero was behind the wheel during the July 22 accident, which killed
dissident Oswaldo Paya and Harold Cepero.

Cuban authorities have released testimony from Carromero that he braked
abruptly on an unpaved section of the road, lost control and hit a tree.
Investigators say he was likely speeding.

Paya's family rejects the official report, suggesting another vehicle
may have been involved.

The trial date was announced by state-run Cubadebate on Monday.
