Technology dearth in Cuba

Technology dearth in Cuba
Updated: 22:06, Friday October 1, 2010

Fidel Castro is an avid blogger who sings the praises of the Internet
age but only about three percent of Cubans say they've used the net in
the last year.

Now, if only his island could get on the cyber-party.

Less than 3 percent of Cubans used the Internet at least once over the
past year and only about double that are on e-mail, reported a state
survey released Thursday.

Cuba publishes annual figures on things like the official number of
Internet users nationwide and the country's total cell phone lines.

But the level of detail contained in this survey had not been made
public before - and it revealed a country astoundingly behind the
technological times.

Just 2.9 percent of those surveyed said they had used the Internet in
the past 12 months, and the majority of those did so at work or school -
not from home.
