Cuba's installed wind capacity has surpassed 11 MW with the
commissioning of its fourth wind farm, located in Punta Rasa about four
kilometres west of the city of Gibara in the province of Holguin. Most
of this capacity is located in this coastal town. Gibara II will have a
capacity of 4.5 MW and employs Chinese Goldwind turbines.
The project has been developed by the state construction company,
Empresa Constructora de Obras de Arquitectura 19, of the Cuban
Construction Ministry and has been supported by other teams from this
agency and the island's Ministry of Basic Industry.
The wind farm consists of six 750-kW Goldwind turbines and the energy
produced will be delivered to the National Electricity System (SEN),
through a 33-kV cable connecting the wind power development area to the
Gibara substation.
Pedro Dorta, investor in Gibara II, said that specialists from the
Chinese firm that manufactures the 50-metre high, fixed-pitch wind
turbines have been working alongside the Cubans.
The Gibara I wind farm is also sited in Gibara, in the northern province
of Holguin. This facility is fitted with Spanish variable-pitch
technology (Gamesa wind turbines) and has already contributed more than
7,000 MWh to the SEN.
