MIAMI -- The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Knight Island repatriated
five Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba, Sunday.
Good Samaritans notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West,
Fla., Wednesday that they were on scene with a rustic vessel with six
Cuban migrants aboard approximately nine miles west of Marathon, Fla.
The Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur crew was diverted and safely embarked
the six Cuban migrants from the rustic vessel. One of the migrants will
be transferred to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for further
processing.
Once aboard Coast Guard cutters, all migrants are provided with food,
water, shelter and basic medical attention.
The cutter Chandeleur is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Miami.
The cutter Knight Island is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Key West.
