Cuba Holds Peruvian Woman Carrying $90,000 in Cash

LIMA – A Peruvian woman has been imprisoned in Cuba since Jan. 21 after
entering the Communist-ruled island with the equivalent of $90,000 in
cash, her family and Peru's foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Cleida Quevedo Malmaceda, 35, was intercepted at Havana's Jose Marti
Airport with $90,000 in various currencies that were to be used to open
a private restaurant in the Cuban capital, sister Gisella Quevedo told Efe.

Gisella, married to a Cuban who lives in Havana and who was going to
manage the restaurant, said that Cleida was persuaded to declare only
the amount of $2,000 when she entered Cuba.

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a press release that Cleida
Quevedo did not declare the money she was carrying, the reason she
remains in custody while the matter is being investigated.

The ministry said that its consular legation in Cuba has visited Cleida,
who is in good health.

The consulate is also monitoring the process and the conditions of her
confinement, and will take the necessary steps to confirm accounts of
supposed mistreatment that Gisella Quevedo has reported from Lima "and
which assign responsibilities."
