HUMAN RIGHTS

Cuba's Working Group of the International Society of Human Rights.
(www.miscelaneasdecuba.net).- The Cuba's Working Group of the
International Society of Human Rights, ISHR, in its today's meeting, has
agreed to issue the present document, in order to signify once more its
firm rejection of the situation faced by Cuban political prisoners,
which remain in jail in spite of the fact that they have done nothing
but express opinions contrary to the present government.
We especially want to allude to the cases of the members of our Working
Group deprived of freedom: the prisoners of conscience Oscar Elías
Biscet González and Darsi Ferrer Ramírez.
In the case of doctor Biscet, we must remember that, during the
repressive offensive known as the Black Spring of Cuba, he was included
in the so-called Group of 75, although he had been in jail for a
misdemeanour which should have been tried in a Municipal Tribunal. At
present, doctor Biscet is facing serious health problems, for—among
other things—he has a grave mouth infection which has caused the loss of
almost all his teeth and which occasions other illnesses.
On the other hand, Darsi Ferrer, also a medical doctor, has been in
prison since last July, accused of possessing a few construction
materials, in spite of the fact that he has demonstrated their licit
origin. In all these months he has not been formally indicted, and he
hasn't been on trial. Because of all this, he has been on hunger strike
and has peacefully protested in other ways.
The Cuba's Working Group of the ISHR reiterates its protest for the
continuing imprisonment of these two prisoners of conscience, as well as
that of the rest of our compatriots who remain in jail just for speaking
their minds.
Free Oscar Elías Biscet González, Darsi Ferrer Ramírez and the rest of
the Cuban political prisoners!
