A newly launched independent opposition newspaper in Cuba will get
around strict online censorship by distributing copies using CDs and USB
sticks.

Cuban opposition blogger Yoani Sanchez is launching digital newspaper
14ymedio on May 21, the first independent media outlet on the island in
50 years.

But to beat potential censorship - where the communist regime controls
the media - the newspaper will be distributed through a variety of methods.

Push notifications to mobile phones, email mailouts, USB flash drives,
DVDs and CDs will all be used to spread the newspaper's reach.

Ms Sanchez, 38, is best known in the country for her blog Generacion Y,
which is known for a critical take on the government.

She wrote on the blog that several members of her team had received
"warning calls" from state security services in recent weeks.

She said: "In the past weeks we have experienced a preview on how
official propaganda will try to demonise us for creating this."

Ms Sanchez described the digital newspaper as "a space to tell stories
about Cuba from within Cuba", and said she hoped it "will help and
accompany the necessary transition that will take place in our country."

She said she had hoped to have the newspaper running already but said
"technology at times is very capricious".

The Cuban government has accused Ms Sanchez of spearheading a US-backed
"cyberwar" against the country.
