WASHINGTON (VOR)— A Cuba expert says Venezuelan President Nicolas
Maduro's weekend visit to Cuba is about ensuring that Cuba will continue
to receive a level of support in terms of Venezuelan oil.
Professor Lillian Guerra of the University of Florida says the visit
underscores that Cuban leader Fidel Castro is still "in the game."
President Maduro marked the July 26, 1953, military assault known as the
Moncada Barracks attack, launching the Cuban revolution. The date of
that assault in Santiago de Cuba became the name of the Castro movement
that eventually toppled the Batista government. Guerra also notes that
Havana and Moscow have a more positive relationship today as exemplified
by brisk Russian tourism to the island nation.
