Ghanaian students in Cuba threaten demo
Over three hundred Ghanaian scholarship students in Cuba are lacing
their boots to embark on a massive demonstration against the Ghana
Scholarship Secretariat over its persistent failure to pay their
one-year scholarship allowances.
The aggrieved beneficiaries are those who had an agreement with Ghana
Scholarship Secretariat that the institution would offer them an annual
allowance during their period of studies.
Beneficiaries of such facility are mandated to work with government for
five years upon graduation.
Today established that the decision to demonstrate comes in the wake of
series of meetings held by the aggrieved beneficiaries on the premises
of University of Medical Sciences at Pinar Del Rio in Cuba.
And what is worsening the plight of the students, the paper gathered, is
the fact that the Scholarship Secretariat does not seem to have the
problem resolved even though the student leadership has written several
letters about their situation to the Secretariat.
One of the beneficiaries of the scholarship programme, Andrew S. Dzebu,
is a student of the University of Medical Sciences.
Narrating their ordeal in a telephone interview with Today, he confirmed
their plan to protest the secretariat's failure to pay them the agreed
scholarship allowances for one good-year.
