Washington The United States said Wednesday it is "very concerned about
the welfare" of jailed American contractor Alan Gross after U.S.
troubleshooter Bill Richardson was not allowed to visit him in
Cuba."We're disappointed that he was unable to visit him," State
Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner said, adding the former New
Mexico governor's visit was not sponsored by the State Department.
"We're going to continue to press for his release," Mr. Toner said. Mr.
Gross, 62, was sentenced in March to 15 years in prison on charges he
violated Cuba's "independence or territorial integrity" in a case that
has soured U.S.-Cuban relations.
