Havana – Cuban baseball player Gerardo Concepcion defected during a
tournament in the Netherlands, official media on the island said.

A brief reference at the end of an article published Thursday in the
Granma and Juventud Rebelde newspapers reported "the defection of the
lefthanded pitcher Gerardo Concepcion of the Cuban team" in Rotterdam.

Cuba's official press usually refrains from mentioning defections by
athletes from the island when they travel abroad to play in
international tourneys, escapes that occur with a certain frequency.

Concepcion, 18, was considered a top pitching prospect and in the Cuban
baseball league's most recent season was selected as top rookie.

During the season, he pitched in 21 games for the Industriales club and
had a record of 10-3 with a 3.36 ERA.
