Time to support Cubans in their fight for freedom

Time to support Cubans in their fight for freedom

I am responding to your request for comments about "The Cuba Time Warp"
feature in the Sun Sentinel's Outlook section of Jan. 30.

Both James Cason and Ted Piccone give us facts. In both cases, they are
facts that are verifiable, even when some support one view and others
support the opposing view. So what happens?

The key issue about facts is that some have more weight than others,
some are more relevant, some have greater long-term impact. I give more
importance to the fact that "Cuba poses little to no security threat to
the United States," as expressed by Piccone, as compared to the fact
that the Cuban government "will use the new-found dollars [from U.S.
remittances and tourists] to end whatever minor economic reforms [it]
had under consideration," which is Cason's point. Notice the recognition
Cason makes that the economic reforms would be minor in any case.

I am not impressed by an eye-for-an-eye policy, steps that even Cason
admits are not "earth shaking." I am more impacted by the dismal
prospect that Cuba could become a failed state. Visions of well-known
failed states in the present day are enough to scare anyone. With that
in mind, I believe that the U.S. government should reconsider past
unproductive policies and just deal with Cuba and its government as we
do with others that we accept on their own terms. Let us show that we
are on the side of the Cuban people in their wishes for individual
freedoms, civil rights and prosperity.
