HAVANA — Police detained former hunger striker Guillermo Farinas
Wednesday as he shouted anti-government slogans on the anniversary of
the death of political prisoner Orlando Zapata, his mother said.

"Two officers detained him here at home, after he climbed up on the roof
and spoke out against the government and remembered Zapata," said
Farinas's mother Alicia Hernandez, speaking to AFP by phone from her
home in Santa Clara, 280 kilometers (175 miles) east of Havana.

After Farinas's arrest, a bus stopped outside the home and some 40
people got out and spent just over an hour chanting pro-government
slogans, Hernandez said.

Zapata, who had been imprisoned since 2003, died a year ago after an
11-week hunger strike to protest the conditions of his detention."
