ARTEMISA, Cuba, July 25 (UPI) -- Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro took a
rare trip outside Havana this weekend to pay tribute to the country's
communist revolutionary fighters.

Castro, 83, sporting an olive green military-style shirt, ventured to
the town of Artemisa Saturday where he took part in a ceremony at a
mausoleum honoring those killed in an attack he led on a military
barracks on July 26, 1953, that is regarded as the start of the Cuban
revolution.

Castro laid flowers at the site, and was cheered and applauded after his
remarks praising the fallen fighters, Granma, Cuba's official Communist
newspaper, reported Sunday.

Castro's public appearances have been extremely limited since he fell
seriously ill and turned over the powers of government to his brother
Raul in 2006.
