WFP Cuba - Hurricane Matthew Situation Report #001
REPORT from World Food Programme Published on 06 Oct 2016
Hurricane Matthew, category 4, hit eastern Cuba on Tuesday 04 October,
at 6:00 pm EDT.
Matthew was the most powerful hurricane in the region in over 9 years
(since Felix in 2007) and stronger than Sandy, which devastated Santiago
de Cuba in 2012.
The Government issued a recovery phase for the most affected provinces
and WFP is exploring potential support to the national emergency response.
Situation Update
The most affected provinces are Guantanamo and Holguin.
No casualties have been reported so far and about 1,079,000 people were
evacuated.
Out of these, 944,000 were relocated to houses of relatives and the
remaining nearly 135,000 people were settled in government shelters.
However, damages were significant to housing, infrastructures,
agriculture and food reserves.
Road connections and telecommunications in Guantanamo province were
severely affected from the collapse of four bridges and sea penetration.
Municipalities of Baracoa and Maisi are isolated.
Crops suffered significant damages in five municipalities of Guantanamo
province. Two of them —San Antonio del Sur and Yateras — are key in
supplying food to the entire province.
Warehouses containing food stocks were seriously affected from the
strong winds. Authorities are currently assessing the quantity of
damaged food.
