Four migrant interdictions at sea in the South Florida Straits led the
Coast Guard to repatriate 38 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba,
on Thursday.
In all four stops, Cubans were attempting to enter the United States
illegally on "unseaworthy vessels," according to the Coast Guard.
"The Coast Guard strongly discourages attempts to illegally enter the
country by taking to the sea," Capt. Mark Fedor said in a statement.
"These trips are extremely dangerous."
Crews from the Coast Guard Cutter Raymond Evans, Coast Guard Cutter
Charles David Jr., and Coast Guard Station Islamorada took part in the
stops.
Thirty-two Cuban migrants were repatriated to Bahia de Cabañas in June.
The Coast Guard estimates that 2,712 Cubans have attempted sea voyages
to the United States since October. The numbers represent at-sea
interdictions, landings and disruptions in the Florida Straits, the
Caribbean and Atlantic.
