At least 101 anti-Castro activists arrested in Cuba in another Sunday of
repression
Just in time for Round 3 of negotiations between American and Cuban
officials aiming for an already determined result -- full diplomatic
relations between Washington and Havana -- the Castro secret police
unleashed another Sunday of repression across the island.
In Santiago de Cuba, Jose Daniel Ferrer Garcia, the head of the
Patriotic Union of Cuba, or UNPACU, reported that at least 101
activists, himself included, had been arrested, detained and then
released far from their homes. Many of those arrested had been trying to
attend Mass at Cuba's most revered shrine.
Ferrer said he was trying to verify arrests of activists elsewhere on
the island.
UNPACU is one of the largest and most-active opposition groups on the
island, making it a favorite target for arrests and other harassment by
the Castro regime. In the past 30 days, some UNPACU activists have been
arrested some 400 times, according to the group.
