Benefit Raises Money To Send Family To Cuba
Story Updated: Oct 13, 2014 at 9:00 AM EDT
A community came together over the weekend to send a young family to Cuba.
Amanda Garcia says her father-in-law lives in Cuba, where he is fighting
for his life. She, her husband and their children couldn't afford the
$6,000 or more needed to be with him, so Amanda's father held a
fundraiser at the Black River American Legion.
"My father-in-law has actually become very ill with kidney failure and,
unfortunately, he's on the decline," Amanda said, "and the funds weren't
there for us to be able to see him."
"What we're trying to do is generate some travel expenses to get the
family back down so they can take care of his last affairs and hopefully
catch him before he passes," said Amanda's father, Claude Phelps.
There was spaghetti, a live auction, a cakewalk and even salsa lessons.
There's no word on when the Garcias will fly to Cuba. Amanda Garcia says
if they collect more money than they need, they'll give her
father-in-law money for his care.
