Lack of federal documents delays hijacker trial

MIAMI -- A lack of needed State Department documents has forced delay in
the trial of an American who hijacked an airliner to Cuba decades ago
and returned voluntarily.

A federal judge said she would order the State Department documents to
be produced in the case of William Potts. Prosecutors and Potts' defense
lawyer have been unable to obtain them.

Potts trial has been postponed until April 14.

Potts faces between 20 years and life if convicted of air piracy charge.
Potts has pleaded not guilty but said he returned to answer for the U.S.
charge.

Potts is seeking credit for the 13-plus years he served in a Cuban
prison after hijacking a New York-to-Miami flight in March 1984. The FBI
says Potts claimed to have bombs on board.
