Thirteen Cuban migrants have stopped in the waters of the Cayman Islands
seeking repairs to their makeshift boat.
Immigration officials are monitoring the 13 Cuban men aboard the
rough-hewn wooden boat outfitted with an outboard motor. In a Monday
statement, local authorities said the migrants' vessel is in transit to
another destination but did not say where.
The Cayman Islands and Cuba have an agreement that Cuban migrants who do
not come ashore are usually permitted to continue their sea journey.
Those who do set foot on the wealthy British territory's shores are
generally detained in a lockup and then returned to their homeland.
The vessel arrived Monday off rocky Frank Sound on the island of Grand
Cayman.
