No doubt pollution brings much harm to the ecosystems and deterioration
to the quality of life of mankind that makes its living on natural
resources like water, and such a thing is not an alien fact in the Cuban
province of Holguin.

Despite the several actions aimed at lessening the harms brought by
pollution coming from cities and towns, schools, tourism resorts,
industries and several state entities the work done is not enough yet.
The actions undertaken last 2010 were step forward for it was a
contribution to pollution reduction by about six percent, what indeed
favored ecosystems in the basins of rivers, the coasts and the mountains
as well.
The measures taken this year would possibly contribute to reducing by
one more percent the contamination.
In Holguin there are more than 100 sources of pollution, according to a
national stockcheck, which produce hundreds of tons of wastes, however,
they are not the only ones but the significant ones.
More than a third of them are poured into the environment without
previous treatment, a situation that become more severe in the
municipalities of Holguin and Moa, and by state institutions like those
from Public Health, the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, the
Basic industry and Tourism.
An encouraging horizon is expected on the investments to come in the
sewers of the city of Holguin, whose wastes are today poured without
treatment into the basin of the Cauto river.
Other ongoing works as in the municipality of Moa are also promising,
for example, at the Pedro Sotto Alba nickel processing plant they are
investing in the recycling of the water used in the industrial process.
On the other hand, they are watering the gardens of several hotels after
being previously treated.
The solution to water pollution, which is indeed a very complex problem,
demands large investments, but the challenge is posed for Holguin that
boasts of having the largest biodiversity in Cuba.
