MIAMI (AP) - U.S. Coast Guard officials say roughly 9,800 people from
Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic attempted to migrate illegally to
the U.S. by sea in the last fiscal year.

Tuesday marked the end of fiscal year 2014. According to Coast Guard
officials in Miami, 3,722 Cubans, 5,478 Haitians and 601 Dominicans were
caught by U.S. authorities in the Florida Straits, the Caribbean and the
Atlantic.

In the previous fiscal year, a little over 6,900 Cubans, Haitians and
Dominicans were caught in those waters by U.S. authorities.

Migrants have long tried to enter the U.S. illegally by reaching
Florida's coast. According to the Coast Guard, migrants are increasingly
crossing Haiti's border with the Dominican Republic to board boats bound
for Puerto Rico.

Fiscal year 2015 began Wednesday.
