The fiery and passionate Cuban ballet will perform in Australia for the
first time in almost a decade.

The Ballet Nacional de Cuba (National Ballet of Cuba) will exclusively
perform the classic three-act Don Quixote at the Queensland Performing
Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane from September 24 to October 3.

Cuban Ambassador Abelardo Curbelo Padron and his wife Maria Esther, who
taught performers in the national ballet for 42 years, were in Brisbane
this week for the official launch.

Mr Padron said the performance would be good for relations between the
two countries.

QPAC chief executive John Kotzas says Don Quixote is one of the most
famous ballets in the world.

"Described as utterly distinctive, Cuba's national ballet company, while
remaining culturally isolated, boasts world class dancers," he says.

"The dancers combine a Russian-style classical training with Latin flair
and are in demand the world over."

Don Quixote is a popular work of fiction written by Miguel de Cervantes
and first published in Spain in two parts in 1605 and 1607.
It tells the story of an idealistic, romantic though slightly dotty
knight and his faithful servant following a dream as they travel through
a series of adventures, blending the comic and the tragic aspects of life.
